Biography

GCC is an artist “delegation” or collective composed of seven members from the Arabian Gulf region of the Middle East. GCC is an acronym that alludes to the Gulf Cooperative Council (the intergovernmental political and economic partnership that connects six countries in the region).

 

 

The group was formed in 2013 as a nine member collective at Art Dubai. Its members emiriti include artists Sophia Al-Maria and Monira Al Qadiri. The group has since shown at Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler in Berlin; Bonner Kunstverein, Bonn; The New Museum, New York; The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; MoMA PS1, New York; Sharjah Art Foundation, UAE; Fridericianum, Kassel; Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; 9th Berlin Biennial, Berlin; Mitchell-Innes & Nash, New York; The James Gallery, CUNY Graduate Center, New York; Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York; Art Dubai and the Barjeel Art Foundation, UAE.

 

Since its debut at Sultan Gallery, Kuwait, the group has continued to address the shifting systems of power in the Gulf region and abroad. GCC live between Kuwait, New York, Amsterdam, London, and Berlin. Apart from several summits held in Switzerland, Kuwait, France, New York and London, Whatsapp is the group’s primary mode of communication.
