'A Selection of Works Presented in 2015 (Thinking Through)' marks the point of departure for 'Thinking Through 2015 (13 Years),' both conceptually and materially. Initiated during a period of making small paintings alongside his 3 year old daughter, the work reflects Schoolwerth’s renewed engagement with gestural mark-making and the physical immediacy of paint. Unlike his typical process, which begins with digital modeling, this piece originated as a small hand-painted composition. It was then photographed, digitally shadowed, and scaled up threefold to produce the larger counterpart. In its modest scale, the gestures remain direct and embodied, yet once magnified, they verge on theatrical excess. The piece offers not only a glimpse into the mechanics of translation that structure the series, but also into a reoriented mode of working, where image and action are re-entwined from the ground up.
